Presentation

The Commune of Djohong is one of 7 communes in the Mbéré department of the Adamaoua region. The commune was created on 24 August 1977. Today, it covers an area of around 2,653 km², with an estimated population of around 60,954 in 2010, including 41,178 host inhabitants (indigenous population) and 19,776 refugees, giving an average density of around 23 inhabitants per km² in 2010. Located at 6.836666° N and 14.693333° E, it is a strategic area in eastern Adamaoua.

The Commune of Djohong is bounded :

To the north by the Commune of Ngaoui ;

To the south, via the Central African Republic (CAR);

To the west, through the Communes of Meiganga and Dir ;

To the east, via the Commune of Ngaoui and the border with CAR.

The town of Djohong is located around 150 km from Meiganga, the capital of the Mbéré department. Its geographical location is marked by its proximity to the Central African Republic border, making it an important entry point for refugees and a crossroads for trade between Cameroon and CAR. It lies in an agro-ecological transition zone between the savannah of northern Cameroon and the fertile plains of the east.

The Commune of Djohong is built on a plateau, at an average altitude of 900 to 1000 metres. It is made up of 52 rural villages and 6 urban districts in the town centre.

Responsibilities of the Commune of Djohong

Djohong Town Council is responsible for :

1° Basic education: Participation in the maintenance and administration of basic education establishments;

2° Vocational training: Participation in the maintenance and administration of vocational training centres;

3° Urban planning and roads: Urban planning, creation and maintenance of earth roads;

4° Tourism: Development and operation of tourist sites of local interest;

5° Leisure and holidays: Organisation of holiday activities ;

6° Public health: Participation in the management of basic health centres;

7° Rural development: Promoting local rural and agricultural development ;

8° Environment : Environmental protection and waste management ;

9° Social action: Social aid and assistance for vulnerable groups ;

10° Local economic development: Promotion of local economic activities.
